Smiths Falls doesn't get nearly enough attention.

Tucked between Ottawa and Kingston along the Rideau Canal, it's about an hour's drive from the capital and packs in more than you'd expect from a town of under 10,000 people. Historic locks, a genuinely interesting railway museum, decent food, and a craft brewery that locals actually like. It's the kind of place that rewards stopping.

The Rideau Canal and Combined Lock

Start at the water. The <a href="https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/on/rideau">Rideau Canal</a> is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Combined Lock in Smiths Falls is the biggest single lock lift on the entire canal system, raising boats a full 26 feet. The canal was originally opened in the 1830s to help transport supplies in case of war between the US and England, though that war never came. It found its purpose as a commercial and recreational waterway instead, and today it's one of the best-preserved historic canal systems in North America.
Walking the path along the lock is free, quiet, and genuinely scenic, with benches, grassy areas, and a good view of the water at every turn. The Rideau Canal Visitor Information Centre is just north of the Combined Lock if you want the full history, three floors of exhibits in a 19th century mill building, open year-round.

Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is set in a beautifully preserved 1912 Canadian Northern Railway station. If you like heritage buildings or old machinery, it's a legitimate must. You can climb into passenger cars, cabooses, and locomotives, and walk through restored interiors that feel genuinely frozen in time. The Pickled Pig at 1 Chambers St is the reliable lunch stop, known for fresh sandwiches and good deli-style food. They share a building with Sweet Scoops ice cream, so dessert is taken care of. Harvest Social on Russell St W leans more sit-down with locally sourced ingredients and gets solid marks from visitors and locals alike. For coffee, Bastard Coffee House and Lyric Coffee House both come up consistently well-reviewed.

Downtown and the Heritage Walk

The town has a free Heritage Walking Tour with a downloadable map at smithsfalls.ca. It takes you past the older parts of town and explains how the railway and canal shaped this place across the 1800s. The Bascule Bridge near Detached Lock is worth finding, a Scherzer Rolling Lift bridge erected in 1912-1913 to carry the Canadian Northern Railway main line across the canal, renowned for its ease and speed of operation. 4 Degrees Brewing Company was the first brewery in town, opened by five local owners at a mall being revitalized by a local developer. The beer is the real deal. Getting ThereSmiths Falls is about 90 kilometres southwest of Ottawa on Highway 15, roughly an hour's drive. From Kingston it's about 1.5 hours heading northwest. No real transit option from Ottawa, so you'll need a car. Parking downtown is easy and free.
